About the society

Engineering interest is spread across Oberlin. This group brings it together.

We are creating a student-led community for people exploring engineering, the 3-2 pathway, and hands-on technical work.

The problem

Students should not have to find the engineering community by accident.

Oberlin students interested in engineering may be studying physics, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, environmental studies, TIMARA, economics, art, or another field. That range is valuable, but it can make it difficult to find collaborators and practical peer advice.

The society is being started to make those connections easier and to give student projects a clear place to begin.

What we will focus on

The first year.

Four things we want to get right before adding anything else.

Build membership

Create a welcoming group across class years, departments, experience levels, and identities.

Make 3-2 clearer

Collect peer questions and point students to current official advising information.

Finish small projects

Choose scopes that fit a semester and document what worked, what failed, and what comes next.

Create repeatable events

Test a small number of meetups, build sessions, and speaker conversations before promising a full calendar.

What this group is
  • A peer community for students interested in engineering.
  • A place to explore technical projects without needing prior experience.
  • A way to share questions, resources, and lessons across class years.
  • A student organization that shares what it is working on as it goes.
What this group is not
  • It is not Oberlin’s official academic advising office.
  • It cannot guarantee admission to a partner engineering school.
  • It is not a substitute for a faculty adviser or an academic department.
  • It is not limited to students who have already committed to 3-2.

General members, project participants, event volunteers, and founding leaders are all welcome. Start with the level of involvement that fits your schedule.
